Job Description

Health Advocates Network is currently seeking a Speech-Language Pathology Assistant to work at a facility in Midlothian, VA. These are registry positions with our company.

Pay Rate: $20 / hour

Shift Details:
  • Full-time SLPA position with on-site SLP supervision, beginning in December or January.

    • Please note that we are only considering SLPAs who have an undergraduate degree in speech-language pathology or prior experience working as an SLPA in a public school setting.




General Description

Responsible for the identification of students with speech-language impairments, provision of speech-language services as well as collaboration with students, parents and other appropriate personnel regarding speech and language impairments and/or services.

Essential Job Functions :

  • Assists in identifying students needing evaluation and/or services.
  • Observes and evaluates students after referral by the school's child study or IEP committee.
  • Follows all LEA and VDOE guidelines regarding special education timelines for completion and submission of written evaluations.
  • Works cooperatively with school staff and parents to assist in determining appropriate and required special education or related service recommendations of speech language therapy.
  • Provides services in accordance with the IEPs of those students who are identified as Speech and Language Impaired or those students receiving speech as a related service.
  • Maintains ongoing and up to date documentation of all service provided and documentation required for IEP documentation and Medicaid billing.
  • Participates in necessary meetings (IEP, Eligibility, Triennial, etc).
  • Reports progress as determined by the student's IEP.
  • Serves as a member of the Child Study Committee when appropriate.
  • Manages caseload in accordance with county procedures.
  • Recommends appropriate service delivery options.
  • Complies with state and federal regulations.
  • Alerts appropriate personnel of any IEP modifications and/or accommodations.
  • Provides effective consultation to parents, teachers, administrators and other personnel.
  • Complies with CCPS special education policy and procedures.
  • Attends required in-services and/or staff development.
  • Pursues professional development.
  • Maintains appropriate licensure.
  • Demonstrates commitment to improving professional competence.
  • Supervise graduate students, Clinical Fellows or Speech Language Pathology Assistants (SLPA) according to department and ASHA/BASLP guidelines
  • Assesses student learning on an ongoing basis and alters instruction to meet group/individual needs.
  • Uses the curriculum of the district to plan daily instructional activities.
  • May perform other duties as assigned.


Qualifications/Requirements

  • Must hold a master's degree in speech-language pathology from an accredited institution and a current license in speech pathology issued by the Virginia Board of Audiology & Speech-Language Pathology (BASLP).
  • Working knowledge of the ethics, concepts, principles, methodologies and best practice of speech language services in the educational setting. Demonstrated ability to develop and implement Individualized Education Plans. Working knowledge and understanding of special education policies and procedures at the county, state and federal levels. Demonstrated ability in decision making, problem analysis, conflict resolution, interpersonal relationships and planning. Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with students, teachers, parents, administrators and other school personnel.


Report Preparation :

Numerous reports are required (such as evaluations, progress reports, IEPs, etc.).

Equipment Operation :

Utilizes personal computer, general office equipment and specialized equipment pertaining to job assignment.

Proficient in the use of basic computer programs and assistive technology.

Decision Making :

High level of independent decision making.

Physical Demands:

The physical demands described here represent those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to use a telephone, to enter data into a computer terminal; to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear, understand speech and speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly at normal levels indoors and on the telephone. Frequent walking, standing, light lifting up to 25 pounds. Physical agility to drive, bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, walk and reach overhead. Frequent movement throughout the school facilities is required. Occasional lifting of objects up to 40 pounds and moving of students weighing up to 150 pounds with assistive equipment may be necessary. Occasional movement of students by wheelchair and other mechanical devices may be necessary. Occasional travel with students on field trips may be necessary.

Work Environment:

Work is performed in a public school setting. Duties performed typically in school settings to include: classroom; gym, cafeteria; auditorium; and recreational areas. The noise level in the work environment is moderate to loud. Occasional exposure to potentially infectious diseases and bloodborne pathogens is necessary.
