Our growing Asphalt company is seeking an experienced Controller to oversee our financial operations and ensure accurate reporting and compliance. The ideal candidate will have strong analytical, leadership, and financial management skills. Previous experience in the construction industry is helpful, but not required. Compensation based on skills & experience. NOTE: Experience in construction-specific accounting (e.g., job costing, project-based financials) is preferred for this position.

Controller Responsibilities

  • Oversee financial operations, including accounts payable (AP), accounts receivable (AR), payroll, and general ledger management
  • Prepare and analyze financial statements, budgets, forecasts, and variance reports to support strategic decision-making
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, tax regulations, and industry standards; coordinate audits and liaise with external auditors and tax advisors
  • Manage cash flow, job costing for construction projects, and financial controls to minimize risks and optimize profitability
  • Collaborate with project managers, sales team, and executives to provide financial insights and support for bidding, contracts, and operational efficiency
  • Implement and maintain accounting systems, policies, and procedures; supervise any junior accounting staff or outsourced bookkeeping services

Controller Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is required; CPA or CMA certification is preferred
  • 3-5 years of experience in financial management or controllership, ideally in a construction or project-based environment
  • Familiarity with the construction industry, including job costing and contract accounting, is desired but not required
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills are needed
  • Proficient in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage, or similar) and MS Office (especially Excel for advanced financial modeling)
  • Experience with ERP systems or cloud-based platforms like Google Drive for financial data management
